Call: GO HONG KONG 2023 is now open until June 11th

The Global Incubator Network Austria (GIN), in cooperation with AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA, is looking for Austrian mid- or later-stage startups that aim to enter Hong Kong with: GO HONGKONG 2023 from November 8th until 17th, 2023. The call is open until June 11th.

PART I | GO HONG KONG ONBOARDING: FLEXIBLE

Get first-hand insights into the Hong Kong market and benefit from a flexible digital onboarding to prepare your internationalization strategy. The selected startups will receive 3h of free and individual IP coaching sessions and exclusive unlimited access to our GIN video masterclasses with valuable expert tips for their market entry. At the kick-off event in Vienna on October 10^th you will receive first market insights and valuable last-minute preparation tips for your physical presence in Hong Kong, while getting to know the GO HONG KONG startup batch.

PART II | GO HONG KONG PHYSICAL: EXPANSION TRAVEL

Part II of GO HONG KONG 2023 is a 2-week ecosystem tour in Hongkong from November 8^th to 17^th, 2023 and offers the selected startups 1:1 business meetings organized by AußenwirtschaftsCenter Hongkong, as well as the opportunity to generate international leads (corporates, potential clients, business partners, etc.) at customized pitch and networking events. In addition, startups can benefit from further on-site activities, e.g. StartmeupHK Festival (see further information below). For the phyiscal trip to Hong Kong with a breakout session to Shenzhen in November 2023, GIN covers 90% of all expenses including flight and accommodation costs up to EUR 20,000.- per startup.

THE MAIN EVENT OF GO HONG KONG 2023

The StartmeupHK Festival is one of the largest startup events in Asia organized by InvestHK. The week-long extravaganza of startup conferences featuring keynotes with renowned speakers, startup village, services marketplaces, job fair and business matching will be open to attendees across the globe. The core event organisers will bring you the latest industry developments in smart city, retail tech, digital lifestyle, global startup trends and insights from the most promising startups, investors and corporates and many more!

REQUIREMENTS

THE PROGRAM GO HONG KONG 2023 IS MOST SUITABLE FOR STARTUPS MEETING THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Verticals: Smart City Solutions (AI, PropTech, Transport & Mobility, Energy & Utilities), Hospitality & Tourism, FoodTech, HealthTech, AI/Metaverse
Austrian mid- or later-stage startup (beyond PoC and seed stage)
Established in the last 7 years (no k.o. criterion)
Raised at least seed-stage investment
Unique product/solution
Working prototype/MVP
A proven business model with traction (clients, revenue)
Interest in connecting to relevant stakeholders (corporates, business partners)
Looking to develop further internationally with a focus on the Greater Bay Area/Asia

Online Pitch Event | June 23, 2023:

The GIN-Team informs all applicants whether or not they are chosen for the Online Pitch via e-mail latest on June 19^th, 2023. The pre-selected startups will receive an e-mail with all log-in details for the Online Pitch on the 23^rd of June, 2023 as well as a 10-minute time-slot. Each startup has 3 minutes to pitch in English followed by a short Q&A session by the jury of national an international GIN-partners.

Final Decision – Congratulations!

After the Online Pitch the jury will select the GO HONG KONG 2023 finalists. The selected startups for GO HONG KONG 2023 will receive an e-mail with the next steps from the GIN-Team latest within a week after the Online Pitch.

20-Mio.-Euro-Exit: Wiener App-Software-Startup Margelo geht an Callstack aus Polen

Vor fünf Jahren gegründet ist Margelo auf die App-Entwickler-Umgebung React Native von Meta spezialisiert. Nun übernahm das polnische Unternehmen Callstack das Startup.

Nur einmal die App coden und sie sowohl auf iOS als auch auf Android als native App herausbringen – das ist eines der zentralen Versprechen von React Native, einer App-Entwickler-Umgebung des US-Tech-Riesen Meta. Doch aus dem Framework ist noch deutlich mehr herauszuholen. Das beweist das vor fünf Jahren gegründete Wiener Startup Margelo. Mehrere Module mit unterschiedlichen Funktionalitäten für Developer, die das Unternehmen für React Native entwickelte, verzeichneten je Download-Zahlen im mittleren bis hohen zweistelligen Millionenbereich.

Dienstleister kauft Entwickler

Ebenfalls auf React Native spezialisiert ist das Unternehmen Callstack aus Polen – dieses richtet sich an große Unternehmen, die bei der Einführung des Frameworks unterstützt werden. Nun übernahm Callstack Margelo für „mehr als 20 Millionen Euro“, wie es von den beiden Unternehmen heißt. Das polnische Unternehmen hatte sich im vergangenen Jahr eine große Finanzierung von der Investmentgesellschaft Viking geholt.

Margelo-Gründer Rousavy behält „signifikanten Anteil“

Margelo war bislang komplett im Besitz von Gründer Marc Rousavy. Er werde auch weiterhin „einen signifikanten Anteil“ an der Firma halten, schreibt er auf LinkedIn und gibt im Posting einen Einblick in die Gründungsgeschichte: „Ich habe Margelo vor fünf Jahren gegründet und hatte damals keine Ahnung von Business – ich habe sogar nach nur drei Tagen mein Wirtschaftsstudium abgebrochen.“

Langjährige Freundschaft

Mit Callstack-Gründer Mike Grabowski sei er schon länger befreundet. Nun werde man gemeinsame Sache machen. Auch Grabowski betont in seinem LinkedIn-Posting die Freundschaft: „Wir haben schon lange darüber gesprochen zusammenzuarbeiten. Einmal haben wir einander sogar versprochen, ein gemeinsames Venture zu starten.“ Nun sei es soweit. Dabei soll Margelos Entwicklung im Open-Source-Bereich fortgeführt werden.

Zudem will man gemeinsam auch auf den aktuellen Wandel im Software-Development durch KI eingehen, heißt es von den beiden Unternehmen in einer Aussendung. „Indem wir diese Stärken zusammenbringen, haben wir das Team und die Reichweite, um noch mehr der schwierigen Probleme zu lösen, die darüber entscheiden, ob Software in Production erfolgreich ist“, wird Grabowski dort zitiert. Und Rousavy kündigt an: „Während Softwareentwicklung zunehmend agentic wird, wollen wir mit dieser Technologie die Foundation schaffen, die Teams brauchen, um mit Agents zuverlässige Software zu entwickeln.“
