„That was the gamechanger“ – How the aws First Incubator helps Startups go from idea to impact

Every startup founder knows how tough it is to get a business off the ground. In the beginning, it’s hard to even know where to start. Everything feels uncertain, and the path ahead isn’t always clear. That’s exactly where Austria Wirtschaftsservice (aws) comes in. The aws First Incubator is designed to guide early-stage founders through those first steps – from shaping a business model to gaining practical know-how.

All it takes is a short project description, an application video, and a budget plan. The current call is open until August 7 at 12 noon – so don’t miss your chance to get your idea off the ground. Anyone aged 18 and over can apply, and multilingual submissions are welcome! Apply here.

The aws First Incubator is all about turning a promising idea into something real, with the right support at the right time. It’s designed to spark entrepreneurial spirit and give promising ideas the structure they need to grow. And it works: brutkasten asked startups like RacePace and RespireLabs, who kicked things off with aws First Incubator and have since grown into thriving businesses.

RespireLabs: From the problem to the business idea

The aws First Incubator gives participants access to coaching and mentoring from experienced experts and founders. The program also offers a broad mix of workshops on startup essentials, personalized mentoring for each team, hands-on training in business model development and focused coaching sessions. The goal is to help founders turn their ideas into market-ready ventures – ideally within one to two years.

That’s how it started for Krzystof Dabrowski. His own experience with illness led him to the business idea behind what is now his startup, RespireLabs. Up to one billion people suffer from sleep apnea – a condition that causes people to stop breathing while they sleep. “It’s most likely underdiagnosed and 80 percent of them don’t know about this disease. So they might be snoring but they might suspect something is wrong but they don’t really know,” he told brutkasten. In late 2023, Dabrowski began developing a mobile app in Tyrol, aimed at helping himself monitor and improve his breathing and sleep habits.

“It turned out to be a business idea that I started to approach. So I started to build a network. I started to apply here and there. And one of the opportunities I applied for was the aws First Incubator”, Dabrowski said. “And that was the gamechanger to be honest.”

„Huge support“

About a year after Dabrowski began working on his app, the official aws First Incubator program kicked off. “They are providing continuously value and they teach on different areas so every workshop is dedicated to one topic. Each time there is something new for me,” he said.

For him, the mentoring and coaching sessions stood out as especially impactful. “Before the program I was doing this, doing that, doing everything basically, but progressing very very slow,” he recalls. The structured support helped him set priorities and stay focused on what truly matters. Another big plus is the network. Participants not only meet experienced mentors, but also connect with fellow founders navigating similar challenges. “Now I feel a huge support. I’m not feeling alone so much anymore. Since the aws First Start-up Camp I have this feeling of being in a community and this is just already a huge drive”, Dabrowski said.

Next up for RespireLabs: a wearable device designed to detect patterns in human breathing sounds with the aim of boosting both cognitive and athletic performance.

Development of RacePace

Another startup currently taking part in the aws First Incubator is RacePace. The Vienna-based company was founded in 2024 by Ido Dassa, Guillermo Alamán Requena, and Lee Barad. RacePace offers an all-in-one race day solution, delivering personalized insights on pacing, nutrition, and training. When the team applied to the aws First Incubator, the idea was still just that – an idea. “For us it was a dream. We get financial support and expert guidance,” said Barad.

Since joining the program, a lot has changed. Especially in the past four months, things have moved quickly: “We refined a lot the direction where we want to go,” Barad said. “We validated the solution with thousands of trail runners and gained real traction in the field. So, one of the most powerful moments for us was the touring that we did at some of the biggest trail races in Europe.”

On top of that, RacePace has released a range of new features in recent months. “We are now supporting all major watches. So basically RacePace is accessible to almost every trail runner now,” said Barad.

Support with fundraising

RacePace is already generating revenue, with a few thousand paying users on board. “It’s intense, but it’s a good intense and it gives us a lot of clarity and confidence,” said the co-founder. Remarkably, the team has achieved all of this with the support of the aws First Incubator. “One of the strongest parts of the program is the structure and the network that it offers. You really get the clear guidance on the different stages that you need to go through and you get hands-on coaching and practical workshops. So the structure really helps you stay focused and keep on moving in the direction that you need.”

By now, RacePace has reached a point where they’re preparing to go fundraising in the upcoming weeks. “We realized that we needed help sharpening the story and refining our pitch deck,” Barad admits. “We got a one-on-one session that made a huge difference for us. We got specific feedback and they helped us work through our story and prepare a pitch deck that we are proud of actually.”
