In Mailand hat Österreichs Nachwuchs vor wenigen Tagen großen Erfolg gefeiert: Beim EU-Contest for Young Scientists in Italien haben Teams aus Salzburg und Niederösterreich Preise abgeräumt. 1989 hat der Wettbewerb zum ersten Mal in Brüssel statt gefunden und seitdem in 24 europäischen Städten Halt gemacht. Österreichs Jugend wurde dabei nicht zum ersten Mal ausgezeichnet.
Beim 27. European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Mailand, der von 17. bis 22. September stattfand, nahmen über 160 Jungwissenschaftler aus 38 Ländern teil – unter ihnen befanden sich auch die zwei ausgezeichneten Siegerteams aus Österreich. Eine internationale Jury zeichnete das Projekt „Tendon Tissue Engineering“ aus Salzburg in der Hauptkategorie unter allen Einreichern mit dem zweiten Platz aus. Darüber hinaus erhielt das Projekt den „Host-Award“ des Italian Institute of Technology.
Michael Bayrhammer und Florian Thaller
Hinter der prämierten Idee stehen die Schüler Michael Bayrhammer und Florian Thaller der HTL Salzburg. Sie haben sich mit einem Projektteam aus insgesamt 15 Schülern mit dem Heilungsprozess von Sehnen beschäftigt.
Die Schüler entwickelten ein System, das den Prozess der Einspannung von Sehnen in einen Bioreaktor wesentlich beschleunigt. Ihre Idee kam auch bei der internationalen Jury überaus gut an.
Aus Niederösterreich konnten die Schüler Lorenz Sauerzopf und Stefan Fuchs aus der HTL Mödling einen vollautomatischen Prüfstand für die Heckantriebswellen von Helikoptern entwickeln. Mit der Konstruktion soll die Festigkeit und die Torsionssteifigkeit der Heckantriebswellen geprüft werden.
Mit seinem „Helikopterwellenprüfstand“ konnten die Schüler aus Niederösterreich einen “Host-Award von der Salvetti Foundation gewinnen.

Ziel des Wettbewerbs der Europäischen Kommission ist die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Austausches, sowie die Zusammenarbeit unter den jungen Forschern.
169 talentierte Jungwissenschaftler aus 39 Ländern beteiligten sich dieses Mal. In elf Wettbewerbsdisziplinen wurden 103 Projekte präsentiert, die von einer internationalen Expertenjury bewertet wurden.
Schon in der Vergangenheit hat Österreichs Nachwuchs auf sich aufmerksam gemacht: Seit 1989 wurden bereits 23 Mal österreichische Schüler ausgezeichnet.

Ehrlich-Sommer explains how the program helped his team sharpen their vision and gain new perspectives: “Interacting with founders from different industries and countries gave us fresh perspectives and helped refine our business model. As engineers, we tend to communicate in technical language. Through the program, we learned to present our idea clearly and understandably.”

Redeem Solar Technologies uses light energy to enable chemical reactions, in order to produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly way. The startup’s solutions are particularly relevant to the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. Through the aws program, the team not only secured financial support but also made valuable connections in the Austrian startup scene.
Interdisciplinary and International Exchange
One of the most significant benefits of the aws First Incubator’s special international call is the interdisciplinary and international exchange. The participating teams come from various industries – from software startups to sustainability technologies and innovative food products. Ehrlich-Sommer highlights this exchange as a critical factor: “It was fascinating to talk to founders developing completely different solutions. This helped us question and improve our own approaches.”
