Was ist die optimale Nahrung für Katzen? Natürlich Mäuse, meint man beim US-Startup BioCraft. Denn schließlich ist die Verdauung der Tiere evolutionär genau darauf ausgerichtet. Aus nahvollziehbaren Gründen kommen die kleinen Nager aber nicht für die konventionelle Katzenfutterproduktion infrage. Das US-Unternehmen macht dennoch Katzenfutter aus Mäusefleisch. Es züchtet dieses nämlich im Bioreaktor.
Tierfutter ohne Tierleid
Bis vor kurzem hieß BioCraft “Because Animals” – der brutkasten berichtete bereits einmal. Der alte Name sagt bereits einiges aus: Ziel des Unternehmens ist es, Tierfutter herzustellen, das nicht auf der anderen Seite der Nahrungskette Tierleid verursacht. Das 2016 gegründete Startup bot daher auch pflanzenbasierte Tiernahrung an. Diese Produktlinie gab man nun aber auf. Mit dem Rebranding wird der Fokus geschärft: Fortan konzentriert das Startup sich zur Gänze auf Laborfleisch (bzw. in der Unternehmens-Diktion “biocrafted meat”) und will dieses über ein B2B-Modell an Tierfutter-Produzenten verkaufen.

Im Vergleich zu Startups, die an Laborfleisch für den menschlichen Verzehr arbeiten, hat BioCraft einen Vorteil: Die Konsistenz des Fleischs aus dem Biorektor entspricht bereits in etwa jener des Breis, der für herkömmliches Tierfutter genutzt wird. Aus diesem wird sowohl Dosen- als auch Trockennahrung gemacht. Produzenten könnten also ohne große Umstellung umsteigen, argumentiert man beim Unternehmen. Übrigens will das Startup nicht nur Fleisch von Mäusen, sondern auch von anderen Tieren im Labor kultivieren.

Mit der Schärfung der Unternehmens-Linie kommt bei BioCraft auch eine Aufwertung des erst kürzlich gestarteten Standorts in Wien, für den eine eigene GmbH gegründet wurde. Hier befindet sich nun die F&E-Abteilung mit mehreren Stammzellen-Forscher:innen. Und zwar unter der Leitung einer bekannten Wiener Gründerin: Theresa Rothenbücher. Sie verließ (laut LinkedIn-Profil) im Februar das Vegan-Lachs-Startup Revo Foods, das sie 2020 mitgegründet hatte und wo sie als Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) fungierte. Bei BioCraft wird die Wissenschaftlerin nun Chief Product Officer (CPO).
