Bitpanda und GoStudent sind Teil eines globalen Trends: Allein im ersten Halbjahr 2021 gab es den Rekordwert von 221 neuen Unicorns, wie aus einem aktuellen Datensatz von CBInsights hervorgeht.
Österreich freute sich dieses Jahr innerhalb weniger Monate über seine ersten beiden Unicorns (nach gängiger Definition), Bitpanda und GoStudent. Dass es sich beim Zeitpunkt nicht um reinen Zufall handelt, konnte man angesichts der Entwicklung in der Coronakrise bereits erahnen. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um einen globalen Trend von gigantischem Ausmaß. Eine aktuelle Aufstellung dazu gibt es von CBInsights.
Demnach kamen seit Jahresbeginn weltweit bereits 221 neue Unicorns, also nicht-börsennotierte Wachstumsunternehmen mit einer Bewertung von mehr als einer Milliarde US-Dollar, dazu. Zum Vergleich: Im gesamten Krisenjahr 2020 waren es mit “nur” 118 etwa so viele, wie bereits 2019. Und die Analysten von CBInsights erwarten im zweiten Halbjahr sogar noch etwas mehr. Es sei wahrscheinlich, dass die Zahl der Unicorns dieses Jahr noch die 1000er-Marke erreiche. Dazu müssten noch mehr als 270 Unternehmen mit Milliardenbewertung hinzukommen.

USA dominieren klar
Aktuell kommt die vorliegende Statistik auf 728 Unicorns. Spitzenreiter in der Liste nach Bewertung ist ByteDance aus China mit 140 Milliarden US-Dollar. Neben Stripe, SpaceX (beide USA) und Didi Chuxing (China) schafft es mit Klarna (Schweden) auch ein europäisches Unternehmen in die Top 5 (Liste der Top 15 siehe oben). Generell dominieren weiterhin die USA mit 51 Prozent der weltweiten Unicorns gefolgt von China mit 20 Prozent, Indien mit fünf Prozent und UK mit vier Prozent.
FinTech ist stärkste Branche
Die Branche mit den meisten weltweiten Unicorns ist FinTech. 17 Prozent aller Milliarden-Unternehmen lassen sich hier einordnen. Knapp dahinter kategorisiert CBInsights 16 Prozent der Unicorns mit “internet software & services”. E-Commerce (zwölf Prozent) und Künstliche Intelligenz (acht Prozent) sind ebenfalls bedeutende Branchen.
