+++ Important information +++ The Global Incubator Network (GIN) is closely monitoring the situation and development regarding COVID-19 and will keep founders up to date about any necessary changes in the program scheduled for September 2020. The Global Incubator Network (GIN) is looking for Austrian later-stage startups from all verticals for our next goAsia program in South Korea. Together with AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA GIN supports founders in their internationalization to the world’s most innovative startups hubs.

goSeoul 2020 is a unique 1-week acceleration program for Austrian startups that wants to cross borders and aim to internationalize to Asia, especially to South Korea. The program allows first insights into the Korean market and connects the startups with relevant stakeholders and experts of the local startup community.

Also, GIN refunds 80% of all expenses including travel and accommodation costs up to max. € 7,000 per startup.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • OPEN to all Verticals
  • Austrian later-stage startup (beyond PoC and seed-stage)
  • established in the last 7 years
  • raised at least seed-stage investment
  • unique product/solution & working prototype / MVP
  • a proven business model with traction (clients, revenue)
  • interest in connecting to relevant stakeholders (investors, corporates)
  • looking to develop further internationally with a focus on South Korea/Asia

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS

Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19, the program scheduled for September might be conducted online. In this case, all selected startups will have valuable workshops and seminars based in Vienna as well as 1:1 online meetings with relevant stakeholders (investors/corporates based in South Korea). Currently GIN is in close contact with its international partners and it will keep founders up to date about any necessary changes in the goSeoul 2020 program.

    Pre-selection

    The GIN-Team informs all applicants whether or not they are selected for the Online Pitch Event via e-mail. The pre-selected startups will receive an e-mail with all log-on details.

    Online Pitch Event

    May 26, 2020 | 9.00 am – 11.00 am (CET)

    The pre-selected startups have 3 minutes to pitch in English online followed by a short Q&A session by the jury of national an international experts. The Online Pitch will take place on the 26th of May 2020 from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. (Please block this time in your calendar preliminary!)

  • STEP 4

    Final Decision – Congratulations!

    within a week after the Oline Pitch Event

    After the Online Pitch the jury will select the goSeoul 2020 finalists. The selected startups for goSeoul 2020 will receive an e-mail with next steps from the GIN-Team latest by the end of May!

Extremtemperaturen, Monsungüsse und schärfstes Streetfood: Die Ankunft in Mumbai ist ein sensorischer Weckruf. Um das Land und seinen Modernisierungshunger zu verstehen, lohnt sich ein Blick auf die Zahlen im direkten Kontrast zu Österreich: Mit über 1,4 Milliarden Menschen ist Indien das bevölkerungsreichste Land der Erde. Das durchschnittliche BIP bzw. Einkommen liegt bei rund 2.300 bis 2.500 Euro pro Kopf im Jahr, in Österreich sind es rund 50.000 bis 55.000 Euro. Auch bei der Lebenserwartung klafft mit etwa 68 bis 71 Jahren in Indien gegenüber über 82 Jahren in Österreich eine Lücke von mehr als einem Jahrzehnt.

Den wohl drastischsten Tribut fordert das Wachstum auf den Straßen: Während Österreich jährlich rund 350 bis 400 Verkehrstote zählt, verzeichnet Indien offiziell über 150.000 bis 170.000 Opfer – mehr als 450 tödlich verunglückte Menschen an einem einzigen Tag. In Gesprächen mit den dortigen Behörden über Vermeidungsstrategien wurde schnell deutlich: Sicherheit ist hier untrennbar mit dem rasanten Ausbau und der Modernisierung resilienter Infrastruktur verknüpft.

Gleichzeitig verlangt einem der Alltag vor Ort alles ab. Der permanente Geräuschpegel, die drückende Schwüle, die spürbare Luftverschmutzung und die sprachlichen Nuancen zwischen rasantem indischem Englisch und lokalen Dialekten fordern die eigene Anpassungsfähigkeit fortwährend heraus. Diese Reibungspunkte machen jedoch schonungslos bewusst, auf welch hohem Niveau unsere europäische Lebensqualität angesiedelt ist, eine Grenzerfahrung, die extrem fordernd, aber genau deshalb ungemein lehrreich war.

Indien klettert im Global Innovation Index unaufhörlich nach oben (mittlerweile fest unter den weltweiten Top 40) und stellt nach den USA und China das drittgrößte Startup-Ökosystem der Welt. Wer begreifen will, wie skalierbare Technologien und Großinfrastrukturen unter extremen Rahmenbedingungen entstehen, muss hierherblicken und Zeit vor Ort investieren.

Bildung als knappes Privileg & als Treibstoff

Der Kontrast zu unserer gewohnten akademischen Welt ist gewaltig: Während ein Studium bei uns oft als Selbstverständlichkeit wahrgenommen wird, ist der Zugang zu universitärer Bildung in Indien ein hart erkämpftes Gut. Das resultiert in einer beispiellosen Leistungsbereitschaft. Am renommierten Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, wo ich einen Teil meiner Zeit verbracht habe, ist der Wissensdurst und der unbedingte Umsetzungswille der Studierenden mit Händen greifbar. Die Universitäten fungieren nicht als Elfenbeintürme, sondern als agile Brutstätten, die ein kompromissloses unternehmerisches Mindset tief in den Köpfen verankern. Die Begegnungen mit zahlreichen Studierenden, deren unbändige Motivation und gelebtes Erfindertum wirkten förmlich ansteckend.

Startups: Tempo, 7-Tage-Woche und radikale Kostenvorteile

Dieser Geist setzt sich nahtlos in der Gründerszene fort. Bei meinen Treffen mit lokalen Startups war die Dynamik greifbar. Man gewinnt schnell das Gefühl, die Arbeitswoche hätte hier grundsätzlich sieben Tage und ein Urlaub wirkt wie ein Luxusgut für spätere Zeiten.

Deepdive im Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Besonders im Software- und KI-Umfeld verblüffen die Kennzahlen für Ingenieurleistungen: Gründer nannten mir gegenüber wiederholt Werte von halber Entwicklungszeit bei einem Drittel der Kosten im Vergleich zu Europa. Auch wenn sich solche Relationen im Detail schwer unabhängig verifizieren lassen, steht fest: Die Kombination aus hochqualifizierten Fachkräften, niedrigen Stundensätzen und bedingungslosem Einsatzwillen verschafft dem indischen Tech-Sektor eine enorme Hebelwirkung. Auch wenn „Made in Europe“ zu Recht einen hohen Stellenwert genießt, sollten gerade bei uns junge Startups über strategische Zeit- und Kostenvorteile durch gezielte Kooperationen mit indischen Partnern nachdenken.

Deep Tech & Infrastruktur: Von Quanten-KI bis RAHSTA Expo

In gemeinsamen Workshops am Civil Engineering Department des IIT Bombay drehte sich die Diskussion um handfeste Zukunftstechnologien. Dabei zeigten insbesondere Impulse zur Optimierung von Energieprofilen in Immobilien mittels quantencomputergestützter Algorithmen auf, wie CO₂-Fußabdrücke im Gebäudesektor auf mathematisch völlig neuem Niveau minimiert werden können.

Den praktischen Gegenpol lieferte die RAHSTA Expo, Asiens Leitmesse für den Straßen-, Brücken- und Tunnelbau. Von KI-gestütztem Asset-Monitoring über Baugeräteautomatisierung bis hin zu lückenlosen Digital Twins und Low-Carbon-Baumaterialien: Das Tempo, mit dem Indien seine lebenswichtigen Verkehrs- und Großinfrastrukturen digitalisiert, ist beeindruckend.

Fazit: Was wir lernen müssen

Indien wartet nicht auf globale Standards, es gestaltet sie durch schiere Geschwindigkeit und Pragmatismus mit. Für das europäische Innovations-Ökosystem liegt der wichtigste Lerneffekt nicht allein im Technologietransfer, sondern vor allem im Mindset: Hunger auf Fortschritt, radikale Umsetzungsstärke und der Mut, Spitzenforschung und Unternehmertum ohne Berührungsängste zu verschmelzen.

Während bei uns in Europa dichte Regulatorien oft für lange Verfahrensdauern und zähe Bauzeiten sorgen, geht Indien den umgekehrten Weg. Ein ausgewogenes Mittelding aus europäischer Sorgfalt und indischem Tempo wäre für beide Welten ein echter Gewinn. Was wir zudem ganz konkret lernen können, ist der Umgang mit extremen Wetterereignissen: Wie Großinfrastruktur immenser Hitze und sintflutartigem Starkregen trotzt, zeigt uns Indien eindrucksvoll. Blicken wir also öfter über den eigenen Fahrbahnrand hinaus.

„Fortschritt entsteht dort, wo wir die Komfortzone der Standards verlassen und über den gewohnten Fahrbahnrand hinausdenken.“ Thomas Greiner. Im Bereich der Verkehrssicherheit wird viel geforscht, es gibt hier aber auch viel aufzuholen, eine Change für Firmen aus Österreich.
