Ehrlich-Sommer explains how the program helped his team sharpen their vision and gain new perspectives: “Interacting with founders from different industries and countries gave us fresh perspectives and helped refine our business model. As engineers, we tend to communicate in technical language. Through the program, we learned to present our idea clearly and understandably.“

Redeem Solar Technologies uses light energy to enable chemical reactions, in order to produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly way. The startup’s solutions are particularly relevant to the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. Through the aws program, the team not only secured financial support but also made valuable connections in the Austrian startup scene.

Interdisciplinary and International Exchange

One of the most significant benefits of the aws First Incubator’s special international call is the interdisciplinary and international exchange. The participating teams come from various industries – from software startups to sustainability technologies and innovative food products. This diversity allows founders to gain insights beyond their own fields and learn from each other.

Ehrlich-Sommer highlights this exchange as a critical factor: „It was fascinating to talk to founders developing completely different solutions. This helped us question and improve our own approaches.“

An essential part of the program is the intensive selection process. During this phase, founders work with mentors and experts to refine their ideas and prepare for the program. This preparation is crucial for consecutive success.

Dachfonds-Management soll im Herbst aussgeschrieben werden – weitere Hürden zu erwarten

Wirklich neu oder gar überraschend ist das jüngste Statement von Startup-Staatssekretärin Elisabeth Zehetner zum mit „bis zu“ 500 Millionen Euro Volumen geplanten „Start-up & Scale-up Dachfonds“ nicht. Wie mehrere heimische Medien berichten, sagte sie zuletzt gegenüber der APA: „Die Ausschreibung für das Fondsmanagement wird im Herbst stattfinden“ – betraut ist damit die aws. Anders wäre es freilich gar nicht möglich, den bereits zuvor kommunizierten Start der operativen Tätigkeit mit Anfang 2027 zu gewährleisten.

Und auch so könnte es schwer werden. Denn „im Herbst“ ist immer noch eine recht vage Zeitangabe und Ausschreibungsverfahren können bekanntlich auch länger dauern, als erhofft – sofern nicht bereits im Hintergrund Vorentscheidungen getroffen wurden, was hier keineswegs unterstellt werden soll.

Kleiner Pool an erfahrenen Dachfonds-Manager:innen

Der Pool an Personen, die konkrete Erfahrung mit dem Management VC-fokussierter Dachfonds mitbringen, hält sich nämlich europaweit in engen Grenzen. Neben dem European Investment Fund (EIF) als dominierendem Player auf EU-Ebene, gibt es einige nationalstaatliche Fonds, die teilweise auch zum Vorbild für die österreichische Version wurden, und einige private Player, die meist mit deutlich niedrigeren Kapitalvolumina arbeiten. Ein schlagkräftiges Team müsse aktiv mit entsprechenden Incentives abgeworben werden. Die Staatsnähe erschwere die Suche zusätzlich, befürchtet ein Branchenkenner gegenüber brutkasten hinter vorgehaltener Hand.

Keine staatliche Einflussnahme?

Dass es, wie versprochen, tatsächlich keine staatliche Einflussnahme auf den Dachfonds geben werde, glaubt er nämlich nicht. So soll etwa die aws laut einer nicht öffentlichen Präsentation, die dem Insider vorliegt, ins Fundraising eingebunden werden. Und das spreche, kombiniert mit dem geplanten staatlichen Ankerinvestment in Höhe von bis zu 20 Prozent bzw. bis zu 100 Millionen Euro (brutkasten berichtete), gegen völlige Unabhängigkeit.

Und auch die Zielsetzung, den Investmentfokus auf Österreich zu legen, passt nicht ganz mit der Idee zusammen, dass das Fondsmanagement völlig freie Hand haben soll. Zehetner äußerte sich auch hierzu gegenüber der APA: Österreich-Fokus ja, „es gibt aber keine genauen Vorgaben für das Fondsmanagement.“ Hinzu kommt natürlich auch, dass es in Österreich gar nicht so viele VC-Fonds gibt – und noch viel weniger im angestrebten Growth-Stage-Bereich.

Politische Überzeugungsarbeit bei potenziellen LPs

Ist das Management dann einmal aufgestellt, dürfte das Finden geeigneter Limited Partners (LPs), also Kapitalgeber für den Dachfonds, zur nächsten Herausforderung werden. Wirklich attraktiv sei die Beteiligung für die institutionellen Investoren, wie Banken und Versicherungen, die man ansprechen will, nämlich nicht, sagt ein anderer Branchenkenner – ebenfalls off the record. Auch wenn – wie angekündigt – begleitende Gesetze die Situation für die in Sachen Risiko sehr restriktiv geregelten Institutionellen verbessern, gebe es nicht automatisch gute Gründe, die für dieses Investment sprechen.

Die Folge: Es bedürfe auch von politischer Seite Überzeugungsarbeit bei den LPs. Dass man bereits jetzt, bevor das Management überhaupt ausgeschrieben ist, hinter verschlossenen Türen versucht, die großen relevanten heimischen Player zu einem Committment zu bewegen, liegt auf der Hand – schließlich soll das Projekt zum politischen Erfolg werden. Dass darunter die angestrebte Unabhängigkeit abermals leidet, ebenfalls.
